Shanghai American School

上海美国学校 — American curriculum school

Shanghai American School (SAS) is among the largest and most established international schools in China, operating two campuses: Puxi in Changning District and Pudong in Pudong New Area. Combined enrolment across both campuses exceeds 2,800 students, making it one of the largest international schools in East Asia.

The school follows a US curriculum with Advanced Placement and, on the Puxi campus, an IB Diploma option. College counselling is highly resourced, with dedicated counsellors supporting the extensive annual cohort applying to US and international universities. SAT preparation resources are integrated into the programme.

Campus facilities at both sites are substantial, including competitive swimming pools, full-size sports facilities, performing arts theatres, and comprehensive technology labs. Extracurricular provision is among the broadest of any international school in Shanghai.

Admission is restricted to foreign passport-holders. Due to the school's size, a wider range of year groups typically have availability than at smaller schools. The admissions team coordinates placement assessments for applicants from different curriculum backgrounds. Mandarin is compulsory throughout.

Fees, admission requirements, and year-group availability change annually. Confirm current details directly with the school's admissions office before applying.
