About
Central pedestrian square paved in Portuguese mosaic stonework, surrounded by colonial-era public buildings. UNESCO-listed.
Senado Square is the central public space of Macau's historic peninsula, an elongated pedestrian piazza paved in the black-and-white wave-pattern Portuguese calçada stonework that has become one of the most reproduced images of the territory. The paving pattern — concentric arcs in basalt and limestone — was designed to evoke the sea, the visual theme that runs through Portuguese civic spaces from Lisbon's Praça do Comércio to the colonies. The square itself is surrounded by pastel-coloured neoclassical facades that accumulated over three centuries of Portuguese colonial administration, most of them repainted in the period leading up to and following the 1999 handover as part of a heritage preservation effort.
The buildings facing the square reflect Macau's administrative history. The Leal Senado (Loyal Senate) building — a Portuguese neoclassical structure rebuilt in 1784 — was the seat of the municipal council throughout the colonial period. 'Leal' refers to the town's loyalty to Portugal during the period of Spanish rule (1580–1640), a historical distinction that earned Macau formal privileges from the Portuguese crown. St Dominic's Church at the northern end of the square was established by Dominican friars in 1587, making it one of the oldest surviving churches in China; its yellow baroque facade and cream-coloured towers are the square's most photographed element at sunset. The Holy House of Mercy (Santa Casa da Misericórdia) dates to 1569 and is Macau's oldest Western social service organisation, still operating as a charitable institution.
The square is UNESCO-listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau inscription (2005). It connects southward to the main ferry terminals and northward via a commercial street to the Ruins of St Paul's — a 10-minute walk through the market district. The square is busiest in the late afternoon and evening; early morning is considerably quieter and better for photography of the facades.
