Mount Gongga (Minya Konka)
贡嘎山 · Gòngjiā Shān
About
The highest mountain in Sichuan at 7,556 m, standing above the Tibetan plateau's eastern escarpment and surrounded by dramatic glaciers, turquoise lakes, and Tibetan pilgrimage trails.
Mount Gongga — known in Tibetan as Minya Konka — is the dominant peak of the Daxue Mountains in western Sichuan. At 7,556 m it is the highest mountain entirely within Sichuan Province and has a reputation among mountaineers for being technically demanding and meteorologically unpredictable, with an accident rate that exceeds even much higher Himalayan peaks.
For non-climbers, Gongga's appeal lies in the circuit trek around the peak's base, known locally as the Gongga kora. The full pilgrimage circuit — a route of deep religious significance to Tibetan Buddhists — takes eight to twelve days and crosses two high passes above 4,500 m. Shorter segments, particularly the popular route from Luding to Hailuogou Glacier on the mountain's eastern flank, can be done as day trips or two-day excursions.
The Mugecuo Lake scenic area on the mountain's northern approaches is accessible by road from Kangding and provides stunning close views of the summit (weather permitting) from alpine meadows above 3,600 m. The lakes here — Mugecuo being the largest — are a vivid cobalt blue in good light, set against a backdrop of snowfields and rocky ridgelines.
Kangding city, at 2,560 m, is the most convenient base and has a growing range of accommodation. Kangding is also a culturally interesting town in its own right, a long-standing junction between Han Chinese and Tibetan cultures with several active monasteries.
How to get there
Fly to Kangding Airport (KGT) from Chengdu, or bus from Chengdu to Kangding (approximately 6–7 hours via Erlang Tunnel). Mugecuo is 20 km from Kangding by minibus.
When to visit
May to June and September to October for clearest views. July and August are warm but often cloudy.
Crowds: Weekdays at Mugecuo are noticeably quieter. For the Hailuogou approach, any time outside National Holiday week is manageable.
