About
China's southernmost tropical rainforest zone in Mengla County, bordering Laos, with extraordinary biodiversity including wild Asian elephants, gibbons, and one of China's richest plant assemblages.
Mengla County occupies the southernmost tip of Yunnan Province and shares a border with Laos. The county lies entirely within the tropical zone and supports China's most extensive surviving lowland tropical rainforest. Unlike the Xishuangbanna botanical reserves further north, Mengla's forests are less visited and in places more intact, with several nature reserves protecting contiguous forest blocks that extend across the border into the Lao protected areas.
The Nabanhe Watershed National Nature Reserve, which occupies a large portion of western Mengla County, protects habitat for wild Asian elephants, Indochinese tigers (rarely confirmed now but historically present), gibbons, and an extraordinary diversity of birds — the area is considered among the most productive birding destinations in China. Dawn walks in the reserve produce sightings of hornbills, pittas, broadbills, and, if lucky, wild elephants at forest-edge clearings.
The rainforest itself is characterised by a multi-layered canopy structure with emergent dipterocarp trees reaching 40–50 m, a dense mid-story, and a diverse understorey. Strangler figs, tree ferns, orchids, and epiphytic mosses are abundant. Guided walks with local Dai ethnic naturalists provide the best access to wildlife and plant identification.
The town of Mengla is close to the border crossing into Laos at Mohan-Boten, making the area a practical stop for those travelling overland between China and Laos. The Dai ethnic culture of Mengla has close cultural ties with Laos and Thailand, visible in the architecture and cuisine.
How to get there
Bus from Jinghong (Xishuangbanna capital) to Mengla County Town, approximately 2.5–3 hours. Onwards to reserve access points by local transport.
When to visit
November to April dry season. Birdlife is most active at dawn throughout the year.
Crowds: Far fewer visitors than Xishuangbanna's main botanical garden. Early booking of guided forest walks recommended for birdwatching enthusiasts.
