Shennongjia — Dajiu Lake and Alpine Meadows
神农架大九湖 · Shénnóngjià Dàjiǔ Hú
About
The highland meadow and wetland zone of the Shennongjia UNESCO World Heritage Site, centred on Dajiu Lake at 1,730 m, offering a sub-alpine landscape of peat bogs, migratory bird wetlands, and wildflower meadows largely separate from the main forest zone.
The Shennongjia UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve encompasses the highest mountain massif in central China, with peaks exceeding 3,000 m in the Hubei-Chongqing border zone. While the main forest reserve draws most attention for its biodiversity and the small population of albino animals — white bears, white snakes, and white deer reported over the decades — the Dajiu Lake section is a distinct ecological zone that merits a separate visit.
Dajiu Lake sits in an intermontane basin at 1,730 m surrounded by forested ridges. The basin floor is occupied by a series of shallow lakes, peat bogs, and reed marshes that function as important habitat for migratory waterfowl during spring and autumn passage. Black storks, whooper swans, and multiple species of duck use the wetlands as staging posts between Siberian breeding grounds and southern wintering areas.
In summer (June–August), the surrounding meadows come into flower with wildflower assemblages that include varieties of gentian, orchid, and several alpine species at the edge of their Chinese range. Boardwalk trails allow access to the wetland core without disturbing the vegetation or nesting birds. The air at this altitude is noticeably cooler than the Hubei lowlands — often 10–15°C lower — making Dajiu Lake a popular escape from summer heat.
A small circuit around the lake basin takes 2–3 hours on foot. A longer ridge walk to the surrounding forested slopes requires local guidance and additional time.
How to get there
From Shennongjia Hongping Airport (flights from Wuhan, approximately 1 hour), or bus from Yichang (approximately 4–5 hours). Local shuttle to Dajiu Lake from Shennongjia town.
When to visit
June to August for wildflowers; September to October for migratory birds and autumn colour. The basin can be cold and misty — bring a warm layer.
