Tengchong Volcanic Geothermal Park
腾冲火山热海 · Téngchōng Huǒshān Rèhǎi
About
A geologically active zone in western Yunnan with dozens of dormant and potentially active volcanoes, scalding hot spring fields, and mud geysers, all within reach of the frontier town of Tengchong.
Tengchong County in western Yunnan sits within one of China's most geologically active zones, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates interact along a major suture zone that extends through Myanmar. The result is a landscape studded with volcanic cones, some erupting as recently as two centuries ago, and an extensive hydrothermal field that produces boiling mud pools, scalding geysers, and hot springs at temperatures exceeding 96°C.
The main volcanic scenic area, accessible about 20 km north of Tengchong town, presents a cluster of volcanic cones that can be hiked. Dakongtong Peak is the highest of the group and its crater is accessible on foot — the views from the rim extend over layered lava flows and the Baoshan Plain beyond. The surrounding forest grows on lava flows of varying ages, with younger flows supporting pioneer plant communities and older flows buried under mature subtropical woodland.
The Rehai (Hot Sea) geothermal park to the south of town is the most dramatic of the hydrothermal areas. The Pearl Spring geyser, the main hot spring pool, and the Dagu Hot Spring are among the named features. The ground between the springs is thin-crusted and visitors are directed to raised boardwalks over the geothermal field. The smell of sulphur is strong in the active areas.
Tengchong's jade market, reflecting the town's position on the Burma Road and the historic jade trade from Myanmar, is a separate attraction of note for those interested in semi-precious stones.
How to get there
Fly to Tengchong Tuofengshan Airport from Kunming (1 hour) or Dali. Local buses and taxis connect the town to the scenic areas.
When to visit
October to May in the dry season. The Rehai is impressive year-round; the volcanic park trails are muddier in summer.
