Kaifeng Iron Pagoda (Youguo Temple Pagoda)
开封铁塔 · Kāifēng Tiětǎ
About
A 13-storey Northern Song Dynasty octagonal pagoda built in 1049 CE and faced in glazed tiles that give it the appearance of iron, standing in the former imperial capital of Kaifeng.
The Iron Pagoda (Tiětǎ) is one of the finest surviving monuments of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 CE), when Kaifeng served as the imperial capital of the most economically and culturally sophisticated Chinese dynasty of the medieval period. The pagoda's popular name is a misnomer — it is constructed of glazed brick, not iron — but the dark reddish-brown colour of its glazed tile facing does indeed give it an iron-like appearance, particularly in morning light.
The pagoda was built in 1049 CE during the reign of Emperor Renzong to replace a timber pagoda that had burned down. It stands 55.88 m tall across 13 storeys, octagonal in plan, with a decorative programme of carved and glazed tiles covering every external surface. The tiles depict Buddhist imagery — arhats, flying apsaras, dragons, lions, and bodhisattvas — in a style that reflects the highest standard of Northern Song ceramic arts. The range of design motifs is extraordinary; no two panels of tile are identical.
The interior contains a narrow staircase climbing through all 13 storeys, giving access to small windows at each level. The upper-storey views across the flat Henan Plain and the restored Song Dynasty city are impressive. The surrounding park (Tieta Park) contains a pleasant garden with lotus pools.
Kaifeng's broader Song Dynasty heritage — the Longting (Dragon Pavilion) park on the former palace site, the Great Xiangguo Monastery, and the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden theme park recreating the famous Song scroll — makes the Iron Pagoda the anchor of a full day in the city.
How to get there
High-speed rail to Kaifeng North Station from Zhengzhou (approximately 25 minutes) or Luoyang (approximately 50 minutes). Bus or taxi to the pagoda from Kaifeng city centre (15 minutes).
When to visit
Spring (April–May) and autumn (October) for comfortable temperatures. Kaifeng's chrysanthemum festival (October) makes the city particularly lively.
