Banking experience for foreigners
HSBC China operates as a locally incorporated subsidiary of the HSBC Group and has the deepest mainland presence of any foreign bank. For foreigners — particularly those already holding an HSBC account in the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, or Singapore — HSBC China offers the most straightforward path to a mainland account. The bank's Global View and Global Transfer services allow linked accounts across supported countries to be managed from a single mobile app.
Account opening requires a passport and valid residence permit (tourist or short-stay visas are generally not accepted for new accounts). Chinese mobile number is mandatory for online banking. At HSBC China branches, tellers work in English; the environment is more familiar for British, Australian, or Hong Kong expatriates than a state-bank branch. In-app English support is comprehensive.
HSBC's Premier and Advance account tiers provide relationship manager access, multi-currency accounts, and preferential FX rates. For clients relocating from a country where they held HSBC Premier status, recognition of that status and simplified account opening at HSBC China is a significant practical benefit.
International transfers are processed online or in-branch with competitive fees for HSBC-to-HSBC transfers (often free). Third-party international wires carry standard SWIFT fees.
Key services
HSBC China offers personal accounts (savings, current, multi-currency), mortgages, personal loans, investment products, insurance, foreign exchange, and comprehensive international remittance. The Premier tier provides a wealth management platform with fund and bond access. Business banking for foreign-invested enterprises and SMEs is a core line, with trade finance and documentary credit services.
Mobile app and digital banking
HSBC China's mobile app is fully English-language and mirrors the global HSBC app interface closely. Multi-currency transfers, FX conversions, and account management are smooth. Apple Pay and Google Pay integration available; QR-code payment via linked UnionPay card for domestic transactions.
Where to find branches
