Citibank China

花旗银行(中国)有限公司 — Foreign bank (locally incorporated in China)

Banking experience for foreigners

Citibank China is locally incorporated and positions itself as a full-service international bank oriented towards expatriates and mobile high-net-worth clients. For US citizens and holders of Citibank accounts in other supported countries, Citibank's Citi Global Connection and Citigold Global services allow relationship recognition and simplified account opening at Citibank China branches.

Account opening requires a passport and residence permit. A Chinese mobile number is needed for digital banking activation. Citibank China branches are notably less numerous than state-bank networks, so Citibank is most practical for residents of major centres — Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen — rather than for those in smaller cities.

All branch staff work in English. Citibank's foreign exchange rates are competitive for major currencies, and international wire transfers — particularly to and from US bank accounts — are processed efficiently. The Citigold tier provides preferential rates, wealth management access, and a dedicated relationship manager.

Key services

Citibank China provides savings and current accounts, multi-currency deposits, personal loans, credit cards (including a Citibank Premier Miles card widely used for international travel rewards), foreign exchange, wealth management (funds, bonds, structured deposits), and comprehensive international remittance. Business banking for foreign-invested enterprises is available at selected branches.

Mobile app and digital banking

Citi Mobile (China) provides a full English interface for account management, transfers, and FX. QR-code payment is available via a linked UnionPay debit card. The app aligns with the broader Citi Mobile international product.

Where to find branches

Citibank China's network is the smallest among the foreign banks listed here — around 13 branches nationwide, concentrated in Shanghai (multiple), Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Tianjin, Chongqing, Hangzhou, and Wuhan. Confirm current branch addresses on the Citibank China website before visiting.

Banking regulations and documentation requirements change. Confirm current requirements directly with your chosen branch before visiting. Account opening policies may differ between branches of the same bank.
