Agricultural Bank of China

中国农业银行 — State-owned commercial bank

Banking experience for foreigners

Agricultural Bank of China is among the four largest state-owned banks. Despite its name suggesting a rural focus, ABC operates a full retail banking network across all Chinese cities. For foreigners, the account-opening process follows the same general requirements as other state banks: passport, residence permit, Chinese mobile number. Some larger urban branches have international-service desks or at minimum designated staff who can assist foreign-passport holders through the process.

ABC's rural roots mean its network penetrates areas and smaller cities where ICBC or BoC branches may be less common, which can be practically useful for foreigners living outside major urban centres. English-language service in smaller branches is limited; the main international-facing service is concentrated in provincial capitals and tier-one cities.

ABC's debit card is on the UnionPay network, and the bank's ATMs accept most foreign cards bearing Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay logos. International wire transfers are handled in-branch through the standard SWIFT process.

Key services

ABC provides the standard retail suite: savings and demand deposit accounts, fixed-term deposits, personal loans, agricultural finance products (primarily relevant to rural business operators), foreign exchange, and remittance. Corporate accounts are available for foreign-invested enterprises with appropriate registration documentation.

Mobile app and digital banking

ABC's mobile app (掌上银行) has partial English support for core functions including balance, transfer, and payment. QR payment is supported. NFC functionality depends on the device and card type.

Where to find branches

ABC has one of China's densest branch networks, reaching into county-level cities and rural towns. In major cities, branches in the central business districts of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu are the most practical points of contact for foreigners requiring English-assisted service.

Banking regulations and documentation requirements change. Confirm current requirements directly with your chosen branch before visiting. Account opening policies may differ between branches of the same bank.
