Wuyi Mountain Tea Pilgrimage, 5 days
The source of Da Hong Pao oolong and the landscape that inspired Chinese rock tea: five days hiking the Nine-Bend River gorge, visiting tea farms, and learning to brew properly.
Wuyi Mountain (武夷山, Wǔyí Shān) in northern Fujian is a UNESCO World Heritage site for both its geology and its cultural significance as the origin of many of China's most celebrated rock oolongs, including Da Hong Pao (大红袍). The nine-bend river gorge, the erosion pinnacles, and the Song-dynasty Zhu Xi philosophical tradition all converge in one relatively compact area accessible from Xiamen or Fuzhou.

Arrival, Nine-Bend River bamboo raft
Arrive at Wuyishan by train from Xiamen (3.5h via HSR) or Fuzhou (2h). Afternoon bamboo raft ride along the Nine-Bend River (九曲溪) — the nine meanders pass beneath sheer conglomerate cliffs streaked with mineral oxide colours. The coffin-shaped burial urns visible in cliff crevices date to the Bronze Age Wuyi Culture.

Tianyou Peak climb, Da Hong Pao rock

The degree of charcoal roasting determines the style (light bao, medium bao, heavy bao). Afternoon three-hour gongfu cha (工夫茶) workshop: warming the pot, leaf-to-water ratios, pour sequence.
Stay in: Wuyishan.
Day 4 · wuyishan
Wuyi Palace, Zhu Xi Academy, tea shopping
Wuyi Palace — the oldest surviving ritual complex in the mountain area, with Song-dynasty stone carvings. The Wuyi Academy (武夷精舍) was established by the Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi in 1183 and became a centre of intellectual life.
