Wuyi Mountain Weekend — Tea and Rock, 3 days
A compact three-day break to the source of Da Hong Pao oolong: bamboo raft through the Nine-Bend gorge, summit hike, and a tea ceremony in a cliffside guesthouse.
China Visit Guide
Conglomerate rock pinnacles above the Nine-Bend River at Wuyi Mo
Wuyi Mountain (武夷山) is reachable as a short break from Xiamen or Fuzhou via HSR — approximately 3.5 hours from Xiamen North. The mountain range forms the border between Fujian and Jiangxi provinces and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its landscape and its biodiversity. This three-day itinerary covers the essential highlights: the Nine-Bend River raft, the Tianyou Peak ridge walk, and a direct encounter with the Da Hong Pao rock tea tradition. Ideal for those adding it as a side trip from Xiamen or Fuzhou.
The tea context is central to Wuyi: the Wuyi rock oolongs (岩茶, yán chá) are among the most prized teas in China, grown in the mineral-rich red-sandstone soil of the mountain. Da Hong Pao (大红袍, 'Big Red Robe') is the most celebrated variety — the six original mother plants on the cliff face are literally fenced off and no longer harvested; commercial Da Hong Pao is propagated from cuttings of those plants' descendants. The flavour profile of a good Wuyi rock oolong — roasted, mineral, long-finishing — is substantially different from the green teas more familiar to international visitors. The mountain tea-houses are a good place to taste before buying.
