Qujiang

Qujiang Pool was an imperial pleasure garden during the Tang dynasty, fed by springs from the Qinling mountains and used by court figures for boating, banqueting, and poetry composition. The Qujiang Pool and Furong Garden (Pool of Hibiscus) appear in Tang poetry frequently enough to establish them as central settings in the literary construction of Chang'an as a cultural ideal. The actual sites were abandoned after the Tang collapse and gradually built over.

The current Qujiang Cultural District is a large-scale development project from the 2000s that attempts to recreate the Tang imperial garden landscape on the original site. The project is ambitious in scale and clearly stated in its cultural purpose — the developers describe it as a restoration of Tang civilisation — though what has been built is new construction on a restored water feature rather than surviving fabric.

Tang Paradise, the largest element of the district, is an entertainment complex of rebuilt Tang-style buildings, gardens, water features, and performance spaces spread across 165 acres. Evening light and sound shows presenting Tang cultural history draw large crowds; the daytime experience is more sedate. The architecture is lavish in its recreation of Tang aesthetic — layered roof lines, decorative brickwork, gilded finials — and provides a visually coherent if explicitly theatrical version of the period.

The Qujiang Pool Park, separated from Tang Paradise and free to enter, is a more straightforward public park built around the restored water area. It is significantly less crowded than Tang Paradise and provides a more relaxed setting for contemplating the historic landscape.
