Hancheng

Hancheng is included here as a distinct excursion from Xi'an rather than a neighbourhood of the city, but its historical significance and accessibility by high-speed rail make it a natural companion to Xi'an's ancient sites. The old town preserves a street pattern and building stock — timber-frame townhouses with party walls, courtyard compounds, and a market grid — that dates primarily from the Yuan and Ming periods and has survived where comparable structures in larger cities did not.

The historic centre of Hancheng is organised around a central north–south axis with parallel commercial lanes in the traditional form of a Guanzhong plain market town. Unlike the more visited and managed heritage towns of Jiangnan, Hancheng's old town functions as an ordinary if quiet provincial settlement: shops operate in the original commercial frontages, residents live in the courtyard buildings behind them, and the heritage management is lighter-handed than in the more touristically developed sites.

Sima Qian Temple, on the loess plateau above the Yellow River a few kilometres from the city, commemorates the Western Han dynasty historian Sima Qian (145–86 BC), who was born in this region and wrote Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian) — the foundational work of Chinese official historiography that established the biographical and annalistic format that subsequent dynasties used for their own histories. The temple complex, reached by a series of ascending terraces, offers views over the Yellow River and the surrounding loess landscape.

The Yellow River at this point — entering the great bend before turning east across the North China Plain — has a particular landscape character that the flat agricultural plains of the lower reaches do not: dramatic loess cliffs, braided channel patterns, and the sense of a river still in dialogue with the geology around it.
