About this neighbourhood
Optics Valley — Guanggu — is Wuhan's eastern technology district and one of the most concentrated photonics, optoelectronics, and laser-manufacturing zones in the world. The district was designated as a national high-tech development zone in 1988 and has since grown into a substantive cluster of fibre-optics manufacturing (Wuhan FiberHome was a national-champion fibre maker), laser-device manufacturing, and adjacent biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), one of China's strongest research universities, anchors the district academically. The Yujiashan main campus is a substantial concentration of post-1949 academic architecture; the wider HUST campus stretches across several adjacent blocks.
Optics Valley Plaza (Guanggu Square) is the social and commercial heart of the district. The central pedestrian square hosts an evening light-and-water spectacle; the surrounding malls (Optics Valley World Plaza, K11, Wanda Plaza Optics Valley) provide substantial retail and dining. The student demographic from HUST and the surrounding universities gives the district a young commercial character — bubble-tea shops, casual restaurants, and creative-industry storefronts dominate.
Optics Valley Future Town (Guanggu Weilai Cheng) is a newer green-corridor development in the eastern Guanggu — a substantial linear park with public-art installations, interspersed with research-park buildings.
