Heping Shopping District

Heping is Tianjin's shopping and commercial heart, comparable in function to Beijing's Wangfujing or Shanghai's Nanjing Road. The district extends roughly from the Binjiang Avenue pedestrian street through Anshan Road and Quanyechang. The principal retail buildings are a mix of post-1949 development and selected Republican-era survivals.

Quanyechang, the six-storey 1928 department store at the eastern end of Binjiang Avenue, is the architectural centrepiece — a substantial Beaux-Arts-style building that was the most prestigious retail venue in pre-1949 Tianjin and has been restored as a working department store. The building's original Republican-era retail-floor layout is partly preserved.

Binjiang Avenue (Binjiang Dao) is a pedestrianised section of the older Tianjin commercial street, lined with Republican-era and modern retail buildings. The avenue connects through to the Hai River and onwards to the Italian Concession.

Renmin Park, a substantial public park in the centre of Heping, was the original British concession's parade ground in the 1880s and was repurposed as a working public park after 1949.
