TIANJIN · FOOD GUIDE
Eating in Tianjin
Tianjin's food culture is closely related to Beijing's northern tradition but has its own personality — the city is famous for the steamed bun (Goubuli baozi), multiple styles of deep-fried dough, and a strong Muslim Hui food presence shaped by its historic role as a treaty port and trading hub.
狗不理包子
Goubuli Steamed Buns
Tianjin's signature steamed pork bun, characterised by tightly pleated tops and a moist, lightly seasoned filling; considered one of China's three great snacks historically.
Where to try: Goubuli Restaurant (狗不理), Shandong Road branch — the original location.
麻花
Mahua Fried Dough Twist
Twisted fried dough sticks in sweet or savoury varieties; the Tianjin version is richer and crispier than versions found elsewhere.
Where to try: Guifaxiang Mahua (桂发祥麻花), Ancient Culture Street; stalls throughout the old city.
煎包
Jian Bao (Fried Dumplings)
Pan-fried baozi with a crisped base and juicy pork-and-cabbage filling; related to but distinct from Shanghai's shengjian bao.
Where to try: Food stalls in the Gulou district old streets; morning market near Ancient Culture Street.
天津羊肉涮锅
Tianmen Lamb Hotpot
Clear-broth mutton hotpot in the northern tradition; sesame-dipping sauce is the key accompaniment.
Where to try: Traditional hotpot restaurants in the Heping district near Binjiang Road.
耳朵眼炸糕
Erduoyan Fried Cake
Round fried glutinous rice cake filled with sweet red bean paste; a Tianjin snack associated with the Gulou area.
Where to try: Erduoyan Restaurant (耳朵眼炸糕), Gulou area.

Ancient Culture Street (古文化街) in Nankai concentrates Tianjin's best-known snacks — mahua, fried cakes, and steamed buns — in a tourist-friendly setting that is nonetheless genuinely popular with locals. The Food Street (食品街) in the Nankai district is a four-storey market building dedicated entirely to Tianjin food, covering everything from northern dumplings to Sichuan hotpot under one roof.
