Suzhou Industrial Park (Eastern Manufacturing)
苏州工业园区 · The eastern manufacturing and research-park districts of Suzhou Industrial Park beyond Jinji Lake — wide tree-lined avenues, Singaporean-influenced low-rise office parks, and a distinctly suburban-international working environment.
About this neighbourhood
Suzhou Industrial Park's eastern districts are the modern manufacturing and research economy of Suzhou. The Bio-Bay cluster, established in the mid-2000s, is one of China's most successful biotechnology research parks — over 600 biotech firms, including substantial international R&D centres for AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, and a growing list of domestic Chinese drug developers.
Dushu Lake Higher Education Town is an unusual concentrated educational district built between 2002 and 2010 — ten universities on a single connected park campus, including the Suzhou campuses of Renmin University, Nanjing University, the Sino-Liverpool University (Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University), and the Singapore-collaborating Sino-Singapore Cooperative University. The library — Dushu Lake Library — is an architecturally noteworthy public-library complex on the eastern lake shore.
Yangcheng Lake, on the northern fringe of SIP and extending into Wujiang district, is the famous hairy-crab production zone. Yangcheng Lake hairy crab — Da Zha Xie — is the canonical late-autumn Chinese seafood celebration, and the restaurants on the northern lake shore (especially around Bacheng Town in Kunshan) are full to bursting from late September through December.
For visitors, the eastern Industrial Park is generally not a tourism destination — it is a working corporate-residential district. The Dushu Lake Library and the surrounding Higher Education Town offer a substantive architectural visit; the Yangcheng Lake hairy-crab season offers a substantive food visit.
