Qianhai

Qianhai is Shenzhen's most recent major urban development project — an area of approximately 15 km² reclaimed from the sea between 2010 and the present, designated as a Shenzhen–Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone in 2012 and subsequently elevated as a major component of the Greater Bay Area development strategy.

The zone's purpose is to serve as a regulatory bridge between the mainland Chinese financial system and Hong Kong's international financial infrastructure. Cross-border renminbi flows, financial innovation, and professional services firms operating across the two systems are the intended anchor activities. The development has attracted the regional offices of international banks, legal firms, and accounting practices, alongside mainland Chinese financial institutions seeking Hong Kong market access.

The built environment is entirely new and entirely planned — a grid of wide boulevards lined with glass office towers, with civic and commercial buildings distributed according to the master plan rather than organic urban growth. The architecture varies in quality but several buildings by significant firms are under construction or recently completed, making Qianhai an interesting site for architectural observation in the way that Zhujiang New Town in Guangzhou was fifteen years earlier.

The Qianhai–Shekou free trade zone designation gives the area certain regulatory advantages for cross-border business that are not available elsewhere in Shenzhen. For most visitors these distinctions are invisible; the zone's relevance is primarily for business travellers in the relevant professional sectors.
