Dapeng Fortress

Dapeng Fortress — Dapeng Suo Cheng — is the most historically intact settlement in Shenzhen, predating the Special Economic Zone by several centuries. Founded in 1394 during the early Ming dynasty as a coastal defence garrison against Japanese piracy and later Portuguese encroachment, the fortress town was designed on a grid plan within a rectangular wall of rammed earth and brick, with four gates at the cardinal points and a series of generals' residences along the central axis.

What makes Dapeng unusual is the survival of its built fabric. The wall, the gates, and a significant number of the original residential buildings — including the mansions of the Liu and Lai families, who produced military officers of regional significance in the Qing dynasty — remain in something approaching their original condition, or have been restored without the wholesale reconstruction common in mainland heritage sites. The effect is closer to a living historic town than a theme park.

The Dapeng Peninsula beyond the fortress has the best coastal scenery within the municipality. The Dongchong and Xichong beaches, accessible by a trail through the Qiniang Mountain protected area, are sandy beaches in rocky coves that were, until the early 2000s, accessible only on foot. The trail construction has increased visitor numbers considerably but the relative distance from Shenzhen keeps them manageable outside summer holidays.

Qiniang Mountain, at 869 metres the highest point in the Shenzhen municipality, offers day-hiking through subtropical coastal forest with views over the South China Sea to the southeast and the Shenzhen urban area to the northwest.
