Tiexi (Industrial Heritage District)

Tiexi was Shenyang's heavy-industry heartland during the 1950s and 1960s — the principal Soviet-aided industrial-development district under the First Five-Year Plan. The district's character was set in the 1950s with substantial state-owned enterprises (Shenyang Heavy Machinery Group, the original First Tractor Factory, the Shenyang Air-Conditioning Factory), the Tiexi Workers' Village (a Soviet-influenced residential complex housing tens of thousands of workers and their families), and a continuous industrial-and-residential urban character.

The state-enterprise-led economy of Tiexi declined sharply through the 1990s and early 2000s — substantial layoffs, factory closures, and population emigration. The district was redeveloped through the 2010s with substantial investment in industrial-heritage preservation alongside new residential and creative-industry development.

The Shenyang Industrial Museum, on the original Shenyang Pumping Station Factory site, is the principal exhibition on northeastern industrial history — covering the Republican-era Manchurian industrial development under Japanese occupation, the post-1949 Soviet industrial aid, the Cultural Revolution disruption, and the post-1990 transformation. The museum is substantive and worth a half-day visit for visitors interested in Chinese industrial history.

The 1905 Cultural Park (so named for the year the district's first heavy industry began under Russian and Japanese investment) is a substantial converted-factory creative-industry zone — design studios, art galleries, restaurants, and weekend creative-industry markets in a converted industrial building.
