About this neighbourhood
Shenyang North Station is the principal rail transport hub for northeastern China — Beijing-to-Northeast HSR services terminate or pass through here, regional services to the Liaodong peninsula, Jilin, and Heilongjiang radiate out, and the metro Line 2 connects to central Shenyang.
The station building is a substantive 2010s reconstruction with provincial-flagship-station scale. The surrounding district has developed as the secondary business centre of Shenyang, with substantial provincial-government and corporate-headquarters infrastructure.
Beiling Park, immediately north of the station, contains the Zhaoling imperial mausoleum (the tomb of Hong Taiji, second Manchu emperor) and substantial surrounding parkland that has functioned as the city's principal public park since 1949. The park's pine-and-cypress forest, extensive walking paths, and morning tai-chi practice are the canonical Shenyang weekend-afternoon experience.
The Mao Zedong statue at the eastern entrance of Beiling Park is one of the largest surviving 1960s and 1970s Mao monuments in northeastern China — a substantial 10-metre-tall figure on a pedestal that has become a city landmark.
