Hunnan New District

Hunnan New District was launched in the early 2010s as Shenyang's principal post-2010 development zone — the city's response to the substantial industrial-decline crisis of the 1990s and early 2000s. The district covers a substantial area south of the Hun River and includes the Shenyang International Software Park (substantial information-technology cluster), the new Hunnan financial CBD, and the Shenyang Olympic Sports Centre.

The Shenyang Olympic Sports Centre, built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics (Shenyang hosted some football matches), remains the city's primary sports venue. The Centre's main stadium hosts Chinese Super League football matches and major touring events.

The Shenyang International Software Park is a substantial Chinese-software-and-services industrial cluster — Neusoft Corporation (one of China's largest IT services companies, headquartered in Shenyang) is here, alongside substantial Microsoft and SAP regional R&D centres.

Hunnan's character is corporate and residential — the district is substantively a 21st-century build, lacking the Republican-era and Soviet-influenced industrial heritage of the older Shenyang districts. For visitors looking for the modern face of the city, Hunnan is the principal location; for visitors looking for the historical character, central Shenhe and Tiexi are preferable.
