Huanggu District
皇姑 · Shenyang's northwestern district — Liaoning University, the Shenyang Military Region headquarters, residential character with a young academic and military demographic.
About this neighbourhood
Huanggu is Shenyang's northwestern district, with a residential-and-academic character distinct from the industrial Tiexi or commercial Shenhe. Liaoning University, founded 1948 from a merger of Republican-era institutions, is the major academic anchor.
The Soviet Red Army Cemetery, on the eastern flank of Huanggu, is the principal memorial to Soviet soldiers killed in the August 1945 liberation of Manchuria from Japanese occupation. Roughly 100,000 Soviet soldiers participated in the Manchurian campaign; the Shenyang cemetery contains memorial graves for several thousand. The cemetery is a substantive historical site for visitors interested in WWII history; the memorial is officially-curated and remains a working diplomatic-relations site.
Beyond the academic and military character, Huanggu is a working residential district. Visitors looking for substantive sightseeing typically pass through Huanggu en route between central Shenhe and the northern Beiling Park / Shenyang North Station district.
