Dadong is Shenyang's eastern district, with a mixed character spanning the Republican-era heritage of the East Imperial Palace district, the post-1949 industrial expansion, and the modern Convention Centre and Sports Complex. The district lacks a single defining character but contains substantial sub-clusters worth visiting individually.
The Shenyang International Convention and Exhibition Centre, on the eastern flank of Dadong, is the city's principal large-event venue. The annual Shenyang Auto Show, the Shenyang International Trade Fair, and various industry-specific conferences run here.
Dadong Sports Complex includes the Shenyang Olympic Sports Centre, hosting football matches (Liaoning Whowin), the major sports events, and the surrounding recreational facilities. The sports complex was built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics (Shenyang hosted some football matches) and remains the city's primary sports venue.
Beishan ("North Tower"), the small Manchu-era pagoda on the northeast slope of Dadong, is one of four directional pagodas (Beishan/Nanshan/Dongshan/Xishan) marking the original Mukden imperial city's outer boundary. The four pagodas are a Manchu spiritual-geography tradition and are substantively preserved.
