M50创意园 · Former cotton mill on Suzhou Creek converted to studios and galleries, Shanghai's equivalent of Beijing's 798.
About this neighbourhood
M50 takes its name and address from 50 Moganshan Road, on the south bank of Suzhou Creek in Putuo district. The site was occupied by the Xinye Cotton Mill from 1937, and the complex of redbrick factory buildings survived the 20th century largely intact. Artists began occupying studio space in the buildings from around 1999, attracted by the scale and low rent of the industrial spaces.
The complex is smaller and less aggressively commercial than Beijing's 798, which gives it a different atmosphere: more working studios, fewer gift shops, quieter mid-week. ShanghART Gallery, founded in 1996 and one of the pioneering commercial galleries for Chinese contemporary art, has a principal space here. The concentration of established galleries within a compact complex makes M50 a practical location for seeing a cross-section of the Shanghai gallery programme in an afternoon.
The Suzhou Creek waterfront outside the complex has been gradually transformed by the same creek rehabilitation project visible in Hongkou. A riverside walk runs along this stretch, with views of the former industrial buildings on both banks. The area between M50 and the Waibaidu Bridge (the Old Garden Bridge, dating from 1907) is emerging as a minor cultural corridor with new F&B openings alongside warehouse conversions.
The industrial character of the surrounding streets — partially residential, partially warehousing — is less manicured than the French Concession. This gives M50 a more provisional, working quality that distinguishes it from museum-district atmosphere, and makes it a more interesting visit for those curious about how the Shanghai art market actually operates.
