Fisherman's Wharf and Macau Tower

Macau Tower, completed in 2001, is a 338-metre telecommunications and tourism tower on reclaimed land at the southern edge of the peninsula. The AJ Hackett bungee-jump operation from the tower's 233-metre platform holds the record for the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. The Sky Walk — an external platform walk around the outside of the tower at observation-deck level — is a separate commercial experience that does not require a harness.

The tower's observation deck provides the clearest panoramic view over Macau's geography — the peninsula below, the three bridges crossing to Taipa, the Cotai reclamation, Coloane's forested hills, and on clear days the Chinese mainland coast of Zhuhai and Guangdong. The view illustrates how small Macau actually is (the entire peninsula is 8.2 square kilometres) and how dramatically dense its built environment has become.

Fisherman's Wharf, the entertainment precinct adjacent to the tower on the reclaimed Outer Harbour land, is a 2006 development reproducing architectural elements from different world cultures — an Amsterdam canal house zone, a Roman amphitheatre-inspired performance space, a Mediterranean-style shopping street. The approach has dated poorly and the zone is quieter than its initial projections anticipated.

The A-Ma Temple, at the southernmost tip of the Macau peninsula near the Barra district, is the oldest surviving temple in Macau — dedicated to A-Ma (the Cantonese sea goddess Tin Hau), the temple predates Portuguese colonisation and is traditionally credited with giving Macau its name (A-Ma-Gao — Bay of A-Ma — corrupted by Portuguese to Macau).
