Songhuaba Reservoir Area

Songhuaba Reservoir, 30 kilometres north of central Kunming on the Panlong River, is the primary water-supply reservoir for Kunming municipality — a 230-million-cubic-metre reservoir feeding the city's water-treatment infrastructure. As a protected water-supply catchment, the surrounding 47 square kilometres of watershed forest and farmland are managed under strict environmental controls, limiting development and maintaining the landscape in a more natural state than areas around the city.

The reservoir valley is one of the few areas within easy reach of Kunming where the original Yunnan Plateau landscape — secondary forest, terraced fields, village clusters in the valley bottoms — survives without the suburban development that has covered most of the city's immediate hinterland. The forested slopes above the reservoir are replanted conifer and broadleaf forest rather than primary growth, but the tree cover is mature and provides genuine habitat.

The farming villages in the Panlong River valley above the reservoir retain a traditional Yunnan rural architecture of rammed-earth and timber-frame farmhouses with grey-tile roofs. Yi minority villages in the upper valley maintain traditional agricultural practices — dry-field cultivation of maize and potato on steep slopes — alongside cash crops of flowers (Kunming's flower-export industry extends into the northern countryside) and greenhouse vegetables.

The area is used by Kunming residents for weekend countryside excursions — walking the valley paths, eating at village restaurants, and accessing a genuinely rural character that the city's rapid growth has otherwise displaced.
