Dian Chi Lake

- The gull season (November–March) draws thousands of black-headed gulls from Siberia; Haigeng Park is a pleasant lakeside half-day.
Dali

- Dali old town; Erhai Lake cycling; Cangshan Mountain; Bai ethnic culture.
- Why go
- Dali is the most natural overnight extension from Kunming; the journey through the Yunnan plateau is itself scenic.
Jianshui Ancient Town

- What to see
- One of Yunnan's best-preserved ancient walled towns; Zhu Family Garden (Qing-era mansion); Confucian Temple (second only to Qufu in southern China).

Yuanyang Rice Terraces
元阳梯田

- Overnight sleeper bus or chartered car; no HSR access

- UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hani rice terraces cascading 2,000m down hillsides; sunrise viewing points; Hani village life.
- Why go
- One of China's most distinctive landscapes; best as an overnight stay arriving for dawn — the flooded terraces reflect sunrise clouds.
Western Hills (Xishan)
西山

- Bus 6 from Kunming's main bus hub; cable car from Haigeng Park

- Wofo Temple; Dragon Gate cliff path carved into the limestone above Dian Chi Lake; views across the lake at sunset.
- Why go
- The Dragon Gate path — carved from solid rock by a lone Daoist hermit over 70 years — is one of Yunnan's more unusual attractions.
Luoping Canola Flower Fields

- Hundreds of square kilometres of yellow rapeseed fields flowering across karst hillocks; February–March peak.
- Why go
