Hubin Commercial District
湖滨商圈 · The retail and dining strip immediately east of West Lake — Hangzhou's main shopping core, where Hubin Road meets the lake and visitors fan out into the city centre.
About this neighbourhood
Hubin is where modern Hangzhou commerce meets the classical lake. Yan'an Road, running north-south parallel to the lakefront, is the city's primary retail axis: Hangzhou Department Store, Hubin Yintai (a high-end mall complex including in77 and Yintai West Lake), and a string of international fashion boutiques. The east-west cross streets — Pinghai Road, Yan'an Road's eastern arm — are pedestrianised in stretches.
Wushan Square at the southern end of the district, where Yan'an meets the south end of Hubin, is the historical commercial heart of the city. Qing-era street layouts survive in the surrounding alleys; the Hu Xueyan Ancestral Hall is a substantial restored Qing merchant residence-museum.
Lou Wai Lou (Tower Beyond Tower), the most famous restaurant in Hangzhou, has occupied its present site overlooking Solitary Hill since the late 19th century. It serves the canonical Hangzhou repertoire: West Lake fish in vinegar sauce (xihu cu yu), beggar's chicken (jiao hua ji), Dongpo pork (dongpo rou), and longjing-tea-infused shrimp. The restaurant's reputation makes it touristy and crowded, but the cooking remains substantive.
Grandma's Kitchen (Wai Po Jia), the hot Hangzhou home-cooking chain that has spread to Shanghai, Beijing, and Singapore, originated on Pinghai Road. The original branch is still operating and is the model for the brand.

Metro Line 1 Longxiangqiao, Fengqi Road, Dingan Road; bus loops along Yan'an Road. Walking distance to West Lake Hubin promenade.

International five-star hotels along the lake — Hyatt Regency, Sofitel, Four Points. Mid-range and business hotels on Yan'an Road and Pinghai Road. Boutique hotels in the converted republican-era buildings on Beishan Road extension.
Hazards & notes
Long queues at Lou Wai Lou and Grandma's Kitchen on weekends — make a reservation or arrive at 11:00 sharp. The Wushan Night Market is busy and pickpocketing is reported.
