Huangpu

Huangpu's position at the head of the Pearl River estuary made it the designated anchorage for the Canton System — the controlled trade regime under which all Western commercial access to China was funnelled between 1757 and 1842. Foreign merchant ships arriving in the Pearl River delta were required to anchor at Huangpu and conduct their business through a licensed guild of Chinese merchants (the Cohong) operating from the Thirteen Factories district in Guangzhou proper. The system produced one of the world's most concentrated bilateral trade flows: silk, porcelain, and tea moving outward; silver moving inward.

The Huangpu Ancient Port site preserves the anchorage area and associated structures from this period. The Nanhai Shen Temple — the Sea God Temple, dedicated to the deity of the South Sea — dates from the Sui dynasty (590s AD) and was the ceremonial site for maritime blessing ceremonies before departures and thanksgiving after returns. The temple's maritime function extended through the Canton System period; it is one of the few surviving structures with a direct connection to Guangzhou's pre-Opium War international trade.

The Guangzhou Development District (GDD), established in 1984 as one of China's first national economic development zones, occupies the modern portion of Huangpu. The zone has transitioned from general manufacturing toward biomedical, electronics, and automotive sectors. The Guangzhou Knowledge City, a joint development project with Singapore in the district's northeast, represents the latest generation of this economic evolution. The knowledge economy focus has drawn university research institutes and pharmaceutical companies to a site that was rice paddy within living memory.
