Baiyun

Baiyun district covers the largest land area of Guangzhou's urban districts, extending from the northern edge of the old city up into the hills north of the urban core. The district's character is correspondingly varied: it contains both Guangzhou's main urban nature reserve and one of the more ethnically diverse commercial zones in southern China.

Baiyun Mountain — White Cloud Mountain — has been a resort for Guangzhou residents since at least the Tang dynasty, when scholars and officials came here in summer to escape the lowland heat. The scenic area, now managed as a national-level forest park, covers 28 km² of forested hills accessible by cable car or hiking trail. The Moxing Ridge trail system offers relatively easy walking through subtropical forest to viewpoints above the city; the summit Mingzhu Tower provides the clearest aerial view of the Pearl River Delta urban field on clear winter days.

The Xiaobei area, around Xiaobei Road and the surrounding streets, has developed since the early 2000s as the commercial centre for the African trader community in Guangzhou. Largely Francophone West and Central African in origin — with significant Nigerien, Malian, and Congolese communities — the traders operate in the wholesale electronics, textile, and general merchandise markets connecting Chinese manufacturing to African retail markets. The concentration has produced a neighbourhood with Arabic-signage halal restaurants, African hairdressers, currency exchange offices, and freight forwarding agencies that give this part of Guangzhou a character quite unlike the rest of the city.
