Qiandeng Lake

Qiandeng Lake — "Thousand Lanterns Lake" — is an artificial lake constructed as the centrepiece of Foshan's Nanhai District urban expansion in the 2000s. The surrounding Gui Cheng CBD was developed as the administrative and financial hub of the Nanhai district, which is technically a constituent district of Foshan municipality but functions with substantial autonomy given the area's industrial wealth from the furniture, ceramics, and aluminium manufacturing clusters in the surrounding townships.

The lake park covers roughly 1.5 square kilometres and is maintained as a public green space with walking and cycling paths, lake-edge pavilions, and an evening lighting installation that illuminates the water surface. The park is primarily used by local residents for morning exercise and evening walks.

The Nanhai District Government Plaza, on the eastern lake shore, is a substantial civic complex in the post-2000 Chinese official-building style — oversized ceremonial axis and symmetrical facades in a vaguely classical register. The plaza is used for public events and reflects the scale at which China's district-level governments have developed administrative architecture.

For visitors exploring the Pearl River Delta region, Qiandeng Lake is most relevant as an efficient base for day-trips into the surrounding Nanhai furniture and ceramic manufacturing townships — the wholesale furniture markets of Lecong and the ceramic-tile wholesale centres of Shiwan are within 30 minutes by bus.
