Nanhai District Centre
南海 · The industrial and commercial core of Foshan's Nanhai district — furniture and building-materials wholesale markets, the Xiqiao scenic mountains, and a working manufacturing-town character distinct from the heritage districts.
About this neighbourhood
Nanhai District is the economic engine of Foshan municipality — a dense cluster of furniture manufacturing, aluminium extrusion, hardware, and building-materials wholesale trade occupying the flat lowlands north and west of the Pearl River. The Lecong Furniture Wholesale Market, in the northern Nanhai township of Longjiang, is the largest furniture-wholesale complex in southern China and serves as a major export hub for the Foshan furniture industry.
Xiqiao Mountain, a 500-million-year-old volcanic landscape in the southwestern corner of Nanhai, is the principal natural attraction in the Foshan region. The mountain's unusual basalt-column geology produces a landscape of waterfalls, cave systems, and steep stairways cut through volcanic rock. The Qing-dynasty stone steps and temple complexes on the mountain's flanks were built as a retreat destination for the merchant-class families of the Pearl River Delta and remain in continuous use.
The Nanhai Guanyin Wetland Park is a substantial public wetland preserve on the edge of the Pearl River channel, with bird-watching infrastructure and boardwalks across the reed beds. The wetland provides habitat for migrating waterfowl and is one of the few substantial natural areas surviving in the otherwise heavily industrialised Nanhai lowlands.
For visitors with an interest in contemporary Chinese manufacturing, Nanhai provides accessible industrial tourism — the furniture, ceramics, and hardware wholesale markets are publicly accessible and give a direct view of the wholesale infrastructure behind Pearl River Delta export manufacturing.
