About this neighbourhood
Houjie is Dongguan's shoe capital — an industrial township where hundreds of footwear factories (supplying Nike, Adidas, Clarks, and dozens of private-label brands) cluster in the flatlands north of the Pearl River. The Houjie Shoe Wholesale Market, a multi-building complex covering several city blocks, is the main distribution point for finished footwear from the Dongguan production cluster.
The Dongguan International Convention and Exhibition Centre, adjacent to the shoe-market area, is the second-largest exhibition venue in Guangdong province and hosts the China (Dongguan) International Furniture Fair, which draws buyers from across Asia and is the principal competition to the Guangzhou furniture fairs. During fair periods, the surrounding hotel and restaurant infrastructure operates at full capacity.
The older Houjie town centre, around the market streets south of the Metro station, preserves a compact Cantonese township fabric — wet markets, hardware shops, Cantonese teahouses, and the ground-floor commerce of a working industrial town that has not yet been replaced by the standardised commercial architecture of newer development zones.
Houjie is most interesting as a subject of industrial tourism rather than conventional sightseeing. Visitors with access to factory contacts can arrange tours of shoe-production facilities; the wholesale markets give a direct view of the scale and variety of Chinese export-manufacturing output.

Hazards & notes
During the Dongguan Furniture Fair (held annually in March and October), accommodation across Houjie and surrounding townships is fully booked. Wholesale markets are not easily navigable for individual retail visitors.
