CHONGQING · FAMILY TRAVEL
Chongqing with kids
Chongqing's hilly terrain can be challenging for families with young children but also makes it one of China's most visually dramatic cities — cable cars cross the Yangtze, elevated metro trains cut through skyscrapers, and night views from the peninsular tip are remarkable. The city has good indoor family attractions.
Chongqing Zoo and Panda Base
Ages 2–12One of the largest zoos in western China; the giant panda and red panda enclosures are the main draw for younger children.
Getting there: Metro Line 1, Dongwuyuan station
Ciqikou Ancient Town
Ages 4–14The preserved Ming-dynasty town has street food, craft stalls, and the gentle activity of a busy traditional street scene; the glutinous rice cake makers are engaging for children.
Getting there: Metro Line 1, Ciqikou station
Hongya Cave (Hongyadong)
Ages 4–14The multi-level commercial complex built into the cliff above the river has restaurants, shops, and river views; the night illumination is genuinely dramatic.
Getting there: Metro Line 6, Linjiangmen station
Yangtze River Cable Car
Ages 5–16An old cable car crossing the Yangtze between Yuzhong and Yangtzejiang; a short but dramatic ride that children find exciting; one of few urban aerial cable crossings still operating in China.
Getting there: Cable car station at Xinhua Road, Yuzhong; walkable from Jiefangbei
Eling Park
Ages All agesA park on a hilltop with views across the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers; open grounds for running and a terrace for panoramic photos.
Getting there: Metro Line 1, Eling station
Nanshan Park (metro: Tan Zi Shi or taxi from Nan'an district) is a forested hill with excellent night views over the city and gentle walking trails. Zhongyang Park in Yuzhong has a small playground and is useful for a short break between sightseeing. The riverfront promenade in Nan'an district facing the Jiefangbei skyline is a pleasant evening walk for families.
Chongqing hotpot with a divided pot (鸳鸯锅) allows children to eat from a mild broth side while adults use the spicy tallow broth; most hotpot restaurants have this option. The Jiefangbei shopping district has international food courts at multiple malls. KFC and McDonald's are on every major street intersection. For Sichuan comfort food without spice, tofu soup and rice dishes are reliable choices — request 不要辣 (no spice) consistently.
