Shapingba (University District)

沙坪坝 · Chongqing's university-and-academic district north-west of the central peninsula — Chongqing University, the Three Gorges Museum, and a substantial student-and-young-professional residential character.

About this neighbourhood

Shapingba sits across the Jialing River from the central Yuzhong Peninsula. The district was Chongqing's wartime academic and cultural refuge — when Nationalist China retreated to Chongqing in 1937–38, dozens of universities, government ministries, and cultural institutions evacuated to Shapingba. The legacy remains in the dense university and research-institute infrastructure.

The Three Gorges Museum (Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum), opened in 2005, is the country's largest single museum dedicated to the Yangtze and Three Gorges region. The collection covers the prehistoric Bashu civilisation, the Yangtze cruise-ship-tourism industry, the Three Gorges Dam construction, and the displacement of cultural relics during the dam's flooding of upstream archaeological sites.

Chongqing University's main campus, founded 1929 and a national-key research university since the 1950s, occupies a substantial portion of the district. The campus retains some Republican-era and 1950s academic architecture.

Geleshan, the small mountain at the western edge of Shapingba, is the site of the Geleshan Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial — Chongqing's principal patriotic-education site, commemorating the executions of underground Communists by the Nationalist government during the wartime period.
