Nan'an (South Bank)

Nan'an (South Bank) is the southern district of central Chongqing, separated from the Yuzhong Peninsula by the Yangtze. The district's defining feature is Nanshan Mountain, rising 470 metres above the river and providing the canonical photographic viewpoint over the city skyline. The Nanshan summit pavilions — One Tree Pavilion and several adjacent observation points — are the preferred evening photography location for Chongqing's vertical-city skyline.

During the Sino-Japanese War, Chiang Kai-shek's wartime presidential residence was at Songzhi, on the Nanshan slope. The compound has been preserved and is open as a museum; the surrounding area retains a small concentration of Republican-era summer-residence villas.

Yangren Jie ("Foreigner Street"), an unusual tourist development on the northern Nan'an slope, is a deliberately-kitsch foreign-themed park — Tudor-style buildings, a small Eiffel Tower, and a generally satirical attitude toward Western architectural cliches. The development is a polarising attraction; visitors looking for authentic content avoid it, while visitors looking for irony enjoy it.

The Yangtze Cable Car connects Jiefangbei in central Yuzhong to Nan'an's northern shore in five minutes — a working transport service and a tourist experience. The southern terminal opens onto a substantial restaurant cluster overlooking the river and the Yuzhong skyline.
