CHONGQING · FOOD GUIDE
Eating in Chongqing
Chongqing is the spiritual capital of Chinese hotpot — the style that evolved here is far spicier and more tallow-heavy than the Chengdu version, with an emphasis on offal, beef, and bold flavours. The city's hilly topography shaped a street-food culture of portable, punchy dishes eaten standing or perching on stools.
重庆火锅
Chongqing Hotpot
A boiling cauldron of spiced beef tallow broth loaded with dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns; tripe, duck intestine, and thinly sliced beef are the classic dipping items.
Where to try: Dezhuang (德庄), Jiefangbei branch; Qin Ma (秦妈), Nanping area; local neighbourhood hotpot alleys (hotpot lanes) in Jiangbei.
重庆小面
Chongqing Noodles
Thin wheat noodles in a scarlet pool of chilli oil, fermented black beans, Sichuan pepper, and deep-fried garlic; often topped with minced pork.
Where to try: Neighbourhood noodle shops in Shapingba and Jiulongpo districts; any 小面 stall open before 10:00.
荷叶蒸排骨
Pork Ribs Steamed in Lotus Leaf

Where to try: Traditional teahouses and dim sum restaurants in the Ciqikou old town area.
瓷器口糍粑

Ciqikou ancient town (磁器口古镇) is Chongqing's most visited street-food destination — a well-preserved Ming-dynasty town where vendors sell mochi, smoked pork, and chilli-spiked cold noodles. Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) on the riverbank has food stalls on multiple levels with dramatic views. The residential neighbourhood night markets in Jiulongpo district are where locals eat and operate without tourist orientation.
