Arriving in Chongqing

From CKG: Metro Line 10 runs directly to the city centre (Jiangbei area and beyond) in about 30 minutes (¥8–14). Taxis from CKG cost ¥60–100 to Jiefangbei or Shapingba. From Chongqing North Station (main HSR): Metro Lines 1/8 connect to the centre in 20 minutes. From Chongqing West Station: Metro Line 9 connects to the city. Didi operates from designated airport pickup points.

China Mobile and Unicom tourist SIMs are available at CKG arrivals. Chongqing has strong 5G coverage throughout its sprawling urban area, though network quality can vary inside the underground tunnels connecting the hilltop districts. Standard VPN requirements apply.

Alipay and WeChat Pay are essential in Chongqing; even traditional hotpot restaurants and night market stalls typically display QR codes. The Chongqing metro and monorail system accept both apps and contactless bank cards. Foreign card linking via Alipay International is reliable.

ATMs at ICBC and Bank of China branches throughout Jiefangbei and Jiangbei accept foreign cards. Cash is useful for smaller hotpot restaurants and Ciqikou market stalls. Keep ¥300–500 on hand.

Chongqing is UTC+8. The city's nocturnal culture — night markets, late-night hotpot, and the Yangjiaping evening food scene — makes it unusually accommodating for jet-lagged visitors who are alert at night and tired in the morning.

Hotels in Jiefangbei and around the Jiangbei Airport district have English-capable staff. The Dazu Rock Carvings UNESCO site has English audio guides. Chongqing's university district (Shapingba) has a relatively high concentration of English-capable residents. In emergencies, Chongqing Medical University Affiliated Hospital has an international department; dial 110 or 120 and ask hotel staff to assist with calls.
