金牛 · Large north-central district containing Chengdu's main railway station and the city's research panda base.
About this neighbourhood
Jinniu district covers a large area of northern-central Chengdu, containing the main railway station (Chengdu Station, to be distinguished from Chengdu East and Chengdu South for high-speed rail) and some of the city's primary visitor attractions outside the historic core.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, established in 1987, is the most-visited site in Sichuan province. The base holds approximately 50 giant pandas and 100 red pandas in enclosures spread across a large landscaped site in the northern suburbs. The pandas are most active in the early morning, particularly between 8 and 10 am when feeding occurs; arrival before 8 am is strongly recommended for manageable crowd levels and the best chance of seeing active behaviour. By midday, the pandas are typically sleeping and the crowds are at their densest.
The base was established as a breeding programme following a severe habitat loss crisis in the 1970s and 1980s, when bamboo die-off events left wild panda populations critically reduced. The captive breeding programme has been successful by most measures; the global captive panda population is now sufficient to support a reintroduction programme, though reintroduced individuals face significant challenges adapting to wild conditions.
The surrounding district of Jinniu is a working residential area without significant tourist infrastructure. The transition between the landscaped panda base and the ordinary Chengdu streets outside its gates is characteristically abrupt — no buffer zone, no heritage precinct, just the city's normal life resuming immediately.
