Beijing with kids
Beijing offers a range of family-friendly activities beyond the standard historical circuit. The city's parks, science museums, and hutong workshops suit children across a wide age range, and the main attractions such as the Great Wall (Mutianyu section) and Summer Palace have good facilities for families.
Beijing Zoo & Panda House
Ages 2–14One of the largest zoos in China; the giant panda enclosure is a reliable highlight for young children.
Getting there: Metro Line 4, Dongwu Yuan station
China Science & Technology Museum
Ages 6–16Hands-on science exhibits, a giant IMAX dome, and interactive space and robotics halls keep older children engaged for a full day.
Getting there: Metro Line 8, Olympic Green station
Summer Palace
Ages 4–14Boat rides on Kunming Lake, marble boat, and wide open grounds; less walking-intensive than the Forbidden City.
Getting there: Metro Line 4, Beigongmen station
Happy Valley Beijing
Ages 4–16Theme park with rides, live shows, and seasonal events; minimum heights for rollercoasters means younger children use the dedicated kids zone.
Getting there: Metro Line 7, Ciyunsi station; or direct shuttle from Sanlitun
Mutianyu Great Wall
Ages 5–16Accessible via cable car; a toboggan slide runs down from one of the towers — consistently popular with children.
Getting there: Chartered car or day-tour bus from Dongzhimen
Hutong Rickshaw Tour
Ages 4–14Rickshaw rides through the Drum Tower hutong area include visits to a courtyard home; interactive and not overly long.
Getting there: Tours depart near Bell and Drum Towers, accessible via Drum Tower station (Line 8)
Chaoyang Park (metro: Tuanjiehu, Line 10) has an amusement area, go-karts, and a small beach; it is the best-equipped public park for children. Jingshan Park opposite the Forbidden City is small but has excellent views and manageable paths. Olympic Forest Park (metro: Olympic Forest Park, Line 8) has large open areas for running and cycling; bike hire is available.
International-standard family dining is concentrated in Sanlitun and around the Chaoyang Park area. Most shopping malls (SKP, Sanlitun SOHO, Joy City) have dedicated family restaurant floors with accessible seating and child portions. Local restaurants near major hotel areas generally have high chairs on request; staff may not speak English but pointing at the children's menu (儿童菜单) is understood.
