Shipping from China to Home: The Practical Guide

Buying more than fits in a suitcase is a common outcome of visits to Chinese markets, wholesale districts, and ceramics or textile towns. Shipping purchases home from China is a realistic and often cheaper option than paying airline excess baggage fees for heavy or bulky items. The right shipping method depends on timeline, value, and how much you are willing to pay.

China Post — the accessible option

China Post (中国邮政) operates post offices in every district of every city. For most visitor-level shipping needs, it is the most accessible and cost-effective option.

EMS (Express Mail Service, 速递): tracked end-to-end, 5–15 working days to most Western destinations. The most commonly used option for shipping purchases home. EMS tracking numbers work on the China Post website and on international parcel trackers. The service is reliable for items of ordinary value.

Registered Air Mail (挂号航空小包): slightly cheaper than EMS, 15–45 days. Tracked at dispatch and on arrival, but with fewer intermediate scan points. Suitable for non-urgent shipments.

Surface Mail (水陆运): the slowest and cheapest option, 30–90 days. Not tracked in detail. Appropriate only for items that are not time-sensitive and where the cost saving justifies the wait.

Packing: China Post provides boxes at post office counters for a small fee. Staff at larger urban branches will help you pack fragile items — Chinese postal workers have a pragmatic approach to wrapping ceramics and other breakables. Bring your home address written in English and your Chinese departure-city address.

International couriers — DHL, FedEx, UPS

DHL and FedEx both operate in China with a network of drop-off points, business service centres, and hotel pickup arrangements. Speed is 3–5 business days to major Western destinations.

Cost: significantly higher than China Post EMS. The price premium is justified for time-sensitive shipments, very high-value items (where tracking granularity and liability coverage matter), or for business-to-business shipments that need commercial invoice documentation.

Hotel pickup: DHL, FedEx, and some courier services offer pickup from hotel addresses. The concierge at larger international hotels can typically arrange a pickup on your behalf. Useful if you cannot get to a service centre with heavy parcels.

Freight forwarding for bulk purchases

Visitors who have made substantial wholesale purchases (at Yiwu International Trade City, Guangzhou's garment and fabric wholesale markets, or furniture markets) are dealing with a different scale — multiple cartons rather than one or two parcels. In this situation, a freight forwarder is the appropriate option.

Freight forwarders in Yiwu and Guangzhou specialise in consolidating multiple purchases from different vendors into a single sea freight or air freight shipment. Sea freight (LCL, Less than Container Load) is the cheapest option for substantial volumes — considerably cheaper per kilogram than courier services, but with transit times of 20–45 days. Air freight is faster (5–10 days) at higher cost.

Wholesale market operators and sourcing agents in Yiwu and Guangzhou can typically recommend established freight forwarders they work with. Request a quote before committing to a shipment.

Customs at your destination

All parcels from China are subject to customs declaration at the destination country. Declare the commercial value honestly — not the wholesale price or a lower value to avoid duty, as this creates legal risk and insurance complications.

Approximate duty-free thresholds:

• UK: goods over £135 are subject to import VAT and potentially import duty. The de minimis is being reviewed as of 2026.
• Australia: goods over AUD 1,000 in a single consignment attract GST at import. Below this threshold, most personal imports are duty-free.
• USA: the de minimis is USD 800 — goods below this value ship duty-free. Above this, formal import entry is required.
• EU countries: the EU de minimis was lowered significantly in recent years; goods over €150 are subject to customs duty; all goods over €22 attract VAT. The exact thresholds vary by member state for VAT calculation purposes.

When shipping beats excess baggage

For heavy items: ceramic sets, stone carvings, heavy textiles, and anything dense, the cost of excess baggage at most airlines significantly exceeds the EMS shipping cost for a comparable weight. A 20kg parcel shipped EMS to Europe will often cost considerably less than 20kg of excess baggage on a long-haul flight.

For fragile items: professional packing and a slower journey without air cabin pressure changes reduces breakage risk for delicate items like porcelain. China Post's packing service at post office counters is adequate for most standard fragile items.
