Tianjin Railway Station

天津站. Tianjin's central station on the Hai River, a metro interchange hub with direct intercity services to Beijing in under 30 minutes.

About this station

Tianjin Railway Station, known locally as Tianjin Zhan, occupies a prominent position on the eastern bank of the Hai River, opposite the cluster of former foreign-concession neighbourhoods that give Tianjin much of its architectural character. The current station building dates from a 1980s reconstruction, with a more recent expansion completed in 2008 to handle high-speed traffic.

The station serves as Tianjin's primary intercity gateway. The Beijing–Tianjin intercity railway, which opened in 2008, brought journey times between the two cities below 30 minutes, effectively making Tianjin a suburb of Beijing for commuting purposes — though the city has its own substantial economy, port, and cultural identity.

Tianjin's concession-era architecture is the city's principal draw for visitors: the former British, French, Italian, Japanese, and German concession areas contain intact streetscapes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most are accessible by metro from the station, making even a brief stopover worthwhile.

Entry tips

This is Tianjin's primary station and the busiest for intercity traffic. The building sits on the Hai River, close to the historic concession districts. Allow 30 minutes from street arrival to platform. Security lanes are efficient outside peak hours.

Security flow

Standard entry: baggage X-ray and ID scan at the main entrance, ticket check at the waiting hall gates, platform scan. The station has a reliable English-language information desk near the main concourse.

Food inside the station

Food options include Tianjin specialities such as goubuli baozi stalls alongside standard noodle counters, coffee shops, and convenience stores. The baozi here are considered slightly better than average airport equivalents.

Food nearby

The Binjiang Road shopping street and the Italian Quarter concession neighbourhood are both within a short taxi or metro ride. Several local restaurants on Jiefang North Road serve Tianjin-style seafood.

Transit to the city

Metro Lines 2, 3, and 9 all interchange at the station. Line 2 reaches Tianjin West Railway Station in about 20 minutes. Taxis queue on the western plaza.
