Kunming South Railway Station

昆明南站. Yunnan's provincial capital high-speed gateway, connecting to Guizhou, Sichuan, and the future Laos–China Railway corridor, with crossing-the-bridge noodles inside.

About this station

Kunming South Railway Station serves the capital of Yunnan province — the 'Spring City', named for its year-round mild climate at 1,900 metres elevation. The station opened in 2016 in the newly developed Chenggong district, a satellite city built to decongest the original urban core.

The building is a large-format modern structure with a roof design incorporating the peacock motif central to Yunnan's Dai ethnic cultural iconography. The ambition is clear; the execution is a reasonable success for a peripheral location.

Kunming is the gateway to Yunnan's extraordinary cultural and natural diversity: the Stone Forest (Shilin, UNESCO), the rice terraces of Yuanyang, the old town of Lijiang (UNESCO), Dali's Erhai Lake, the tropical Xishuangbanna region bordering Laos and Myanmar, and the high-altitude trekking areas of Meili Snow Mountain and Shangri-La. The Kunming–Laos railway (opened 2021) departs from Kunming South, making cross-border rail travel to Vientiane possible for the first time — a journey of approximately 10 hours.

Entry tips

Kunming South is the primary high-speed hub, located south of the city centre in Chenggong district — further out than most comparable stations. Allow 40 minutes from arrival and factor in the metro travel time from the city. Some domestic services use the older Kunming Station downtown.

Security flow

Three-stage process. The station is clean and well maintained. Security is efficient outside peak periods. English signage is adequate.

Food inside the station

Yunnan cuisine represented: crossing-the-bridge noodles (guoqiao mixian) stalls, mushroom rice dishes, and Yunnan ham stalls alongside standard chains. The crossing-the-bridge noodle format — where a large bowl of broth arrives and diners add ingredients tableside — is worth trying.

Food nearby

Chenggong district is primarily a new development zone. For the full Yunnan dining experience, take the metro to the old city (Jinbi Road area) or the Cuihu Lake neighbourhood.

Transit to the city

Metro Line 6 connects Kunming South to the city centre (Kunming Railway Station, the old downtown hub) in about 35 minutes (CNY 5–7). Taxis to the old city cost approximately CNY 50–70.
