Zhengzhou Metro
郑州地铁. A nine-line network connecting Zhengzhou's high-speed interchange to the Yellow River Cultural Park and the city's Henan heritage sites.
About this metro system
Zhengzhou Metro has grown considerably since its opening in 2013, now covering nine lines across a city of over 12 million that sits at the heart of China's most historically dense region. The central plains of Henan province, through which Zhengzhou's metro-served area extends, contain more UNESCO World Heritage Sites within easy reach than any comparable region in China.
Line 1 is the main east–west spine, running from Zhengzhou East Railway Station through the city centre to the western districts. Line 4 connects north–south and provides access to the Yellow River Scenic Area on the city's northern edge. The Henan Museum, which holds one of China's finest collections of ancient bronzes, oracle bones, and jade artefacts, is on Line 2.
Zhengzhou is notable as a gateway rather than a destination city, but it serves that function exceptionally well. The Shaolin Monastery (the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and Chinese martial arts) is accessible by bus or taxi from Zhengzhou. The Longmen Grottoes near Luoyang — one of China's most important Buddhist sculpture sites — are a 40-minute high-speed train ride west. Kaifeng, the Song dynasty capital, is an hour east.
