Xi'an Metro
西安地铁. A nine-line network inside and around Xi'an's ancient city walls, connecting the Terracotta Warriors' shuttle bus, the Muslim Quarter, and the high-speed station.
About this metro system
Xi'an Metro serves the ancient capital that functioned as the eastern terminus of the Silk Road — modern Xi'an has been inhabited continuously since the Bronze Age, served as imperial capital for more than 1,100 years across multiple dynasties, and contains a concentration of historical monuments that has few parallels in Asia.
Line 4 connects Xi'an North Railway Station (the high-speed hub) to the city centre, passing near the University District and the Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park. Line 2, the north–south spine, runs through the old city along the axis of the ancient Tang capital's main ceremonial road. Bell Tower station (Lines 2 and 6) is the most useful interchange for visitors: the Bell Tower itself, the Drum Tower, and the entrance to the Muslim Quarter are all within short walking distance.
The Terracotta Warriors, which are the primary reason most international visitors come to Xi'an, are located about 30 kilometres east of the city and require a separate journey from the metro: Line 9 connects to the Huaqing Palace area (near the Terracotta Pit 1 museum), from which a short bus or taxi completes the journey. The Metro-and-bus combination takes approximately one hour from the city centre. Line 1 runs east–west along the southern edge of the walled city, providing access to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area via a short taxi connection.
Foreigner notes
Good English signage on all lines. The network serves the main historical attractions within and around the old city. Line 4 connects to Xi'an North Railway Station. The Muslim Quarter is within walking distance of Bell Tower station (Lines 2 and 6).
