Suzhou Metro

苏州轨道交通. A six-line network connecting Suzhou's classical garden district and railway stations, with Metro Line 4 serving the main tourist corridor.

About this metro system

Suzhou Metro is a compact, well-maintained network serving one of China's most visited heritage cities. The system began operations in 2012 with Line 1 and has since grown to six lines covering the historic old city, the modern Suzhou Industrial Park to the east, and the newer Suzhou New District to the west.

Line 4 is the network's most important route for visitors: it runs from Suzhou Railway Station south through the old city, passing within walking distance of several classical gardens, the Silk Museum, and the canal-side Pingjiang Road heritage street. Journey times from the station to the garden district are typically 12–15 minutes.

Suzhou's metro serves a city of nearly 13 million people that occupies a peculiar dual identity: one of China's most important manufacturing and logistics cities (the Suzhou Industrial Park is among the most productive special economic zones in the country) and simultaneously a preserved heritage centre whose classical gardens, canals, and whitewashed courtyard architecture have been largely protected from the development pressures that have altered comparable historic cities. The contrast between the heritage old town and the glass-and-steel New District — visible from Line 1 — is one of the more striking juxtapositions in Chinese urban geography.

Foreigner notes

English signage present on all lines. Ticket machines support English. The network connects the railway station to the classical garden district efficiently. Line 4 is the most useful for tourists.
