Shenyang Metro
沈阳地铁. A six-line network in Liaoning's capital, connecting the Mukden Palace UNESCO site, railway stations, and the airport via Line 2.
About this metro system
Shenyang Metro serves Liaoning's provincial capital, historically significant as the seat of Nurhaci and Huang Taiji — the founders of the Qing dynasty — before their conquest of the Ming and the move of the capital to Beijing. The Mukden Palace (Shenyang Imperial Palace) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city's most important attraction, representing an architectural tradition distinct from the later Beijing approach.
The network began with Line 2 in 2010 and has since expanded to six lines. Line 2 is the most useful for visitors, connecting the airport to the city centre and passing near the Mukden Palace and the Zhongjie commercial district. Line 1 runs east–west through the city's main employment districts.
Shenyang is the largest city in China's dongbei (northeast) region — the old industrial heartland that was the centre of heavy manufacturing in the Mao-era economy and has been navigating a difficult transition since the 1980s' state enterprise reforms. The city's identity is shaped by that industrial heritage, by the Manchu dynastic history visible at the Imperial Palace, and by the hearty cold-weather cuisine that includes suan cai (fermented cabbage stew), braised pork and potato dishes, and the distinctive Harbin-adjacent food culture of the broader northeast.
Foreigner notes
