Ningbo Metro
宁波轨道交通. A six-line network in Zhejiang's second city, connecting the railway station, the historic Tianyi Pavilion, and the eastern port districts.
About this metro system
Ningbo Metro serves Zhejiang's second major city, a port city of eight million with one of the world's busiest container ports (Ningbo-Zhoushan Port) and a substantial trading heritage stretching back to the Tang dynasty, when it was known as Mingzhou and functioned as a key node on the maritime Silk Road.
The network opened in 2014 and now operates six lines covering the main urban districts. Line 2 is the most relevant for visitors, serving the railway station, the Tianyi Pavilion area (the oldest private library in China, dating from 1561), and the Moon Lake park district. Line 1 connects the north of the city to the southern residential areas.
Ningbo is often underestimated as a visitor destination compared to the more celebrated Zhejiang cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou. But it has genuine attractions: the Tianyi Pavilion and its attached garden complex, the Old Bund (Laowai Tan) area with its colonial-era buildings and growing restaurant scene, the Baoguo Temple (the oldest surviving wooden structure in southern China), and ferry connections to the Buddhist pilgrimage island of Putuoshan.
Foreigner notes
English signage on all lines. The network covers the old city, the railway station, and the waterfront area. The system is well maintained and not overcrowded. Alipay and WeChat Pay entry available.
